The Municipality of Clarington is planning to reconstruct George Street West, from North Street to Manvers Road, and George Street East, from Mill Street North to Beaver Street North, in spring 2025 (pending Council approval).
The current condition of these roads has deteriorated due to age and insufficient drainage, leading to issues like cracking, heaving, potholes and road surface breakage. These issues pose a safety risk for motorists and pedestrians, particularly during inclement weather.
To address these challenges, the Region of Durham will partner with the Municipality to replace the aging watermain infrastructure within the project limits, which has reached the end of its service life. This will also involve upgrading the watermain service connections up to the edge of the road right-of-way (property line).
The proposed work will include:
The proposed design will avoid potential impacts to private properties as much as possible, however, local driveway aprons, front yards and some vegetation may be affected. The Municipality will work with homeowners to assess and replace lost trees and vegetation to match their existing conditions as required.
A Public Information Centre was held on Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m. The session provided more details on the project, addressed public comments and allowed residents to ask questions.
