As we work to minimize our greenhouse gas emissions, we know that transportation is one of the biggest contributors to pollution and climate change. Clarington has begun to budget and change its vehicle fleet to low carbon electric vehicles (EVs). Read Clarington’s Five-Year Electric Vehicle Action Plan (PDF), which outlines how the Municipality will transition to using more electric vehicles in its fleet where possible.
The Municipality is investing in the necessary infrastructure to charge these electric vehicles. Currently, we have EV charging stations in the following locations.
All fees associated with the use of Municipal EV charging stations will cover the cost of the operation, maintenance, and replacement of stations. Daytime charging is capped at three hours.
Across Canada, there are some 5,000 public charging stations, and that number keeps growing. They can be hard to find, and that's where ChargeHub comes in. ChargeHub is an independent, user-verified map, which shows and tracks the locations and operating status of every registered public charging station across North America. It provides user feedback on EV stations, built-in navigation features and search filters to help users find public charging stations on their route. You can access ChargeHub online or by downloading the free app from Google Play or the App Store.
Do I need to pay to charge my car? |
Yes. Clarington charges a fee to help offset the costs of charger maintenance and replacement. |
How do I pay for using an EV charge station? |
There are three ways you can pay for the use of the charge station. You can pay using the ChargeLab app. Just download the app and follow the instructions. You can also pay using a pre-registered RFID card or with your phone by scanning the QR code on the charge station and following the instructions. |
How long does it take to charge my car? |
Charging rates for EVs are measured in range per hour (RPH) and based on several factors. Typically, level two chargers offered by the Municipality deliver an RPH of 40 kilometres. |
How long can I park my car at a charging station? |
EVs can be parked at chargers for as long as they are actively being charged. You will be billed according to how long you charge your EV. Once your battery reaches a full charge, you are expected to move your car for someone else to use the station. |
Can I leave my EV charging overnight? |
Yes, residents may leave their car charging overnight. The Municipality is not responsible for any damages that may occur to private property. |
Can I use any charging station? |
Not necessarily. Look for signs marking public charging stations and those for private charging. As Clarington transitions its fleet to EVs, we will be earmarking some of the stations for our use only. |
Can I reserve a charging station? |
Currently, all public chargers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. |
The Region of Durham recently launched its E-mission program looking to electrify transportation across area municipalities. The federal government has also launched an Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles Program (iZEV), promoting different makes and models of EVs for purchase or lease with incentives of up to $5,000.
EV drivers in Ontario qualify for $1,000 toward the purchase of a used fully electric vehicle. This incentive is brought to you by Plug’n Drive, in collaboration with Clean Air Partnership, and made possible through the financial support of the M.H. Brigham Foundation.
