Building or Renovating

If you are planning to build or renovate on your property, you may need a building permit.

You should be aware of fees and charges you may need to pay to complete your project.

It's our job to:

• Ensure all permit applications conform to applicable laws and that plans conform to the Ontario Building Code
• Issue and revoke building permits
• Interpret the development charges by-law
• Interpret the building by-law to collect building permit fees
• Conduct field inspections (i.e. building, plumbing and HVAC inspections)
• Issue renovation or addition permits
• Issue demolition permits

Before you dig

Are you building a deck or fence, putting in a new garden or planting a tree? Before you dig on or near your property, you need to request to find service lines on your property; it's a free service. Digging on your property, even with a shovel, can damage underground utility service lines that provide water, cable, hydro and gas.

Building a house

The Municipality provides consultation services to homeowners wanting to construct their own home. The Planning Department and Building Services Division are located in one convenient area on the third floor of the Municipal Administrative Centre. Our goal is to provide the most efficient and complete information to residents who want to construct a home.

If you are planning to build or renovate on your property, you may need a building permit. Our Plans Examiners are available to answer questions on the building permit process including: drawings required, applicable law requirements and fees. View the general requirements for residential building permits that may apply to your property. Please note that requirements for every property vary.

During this consultation, the Planning Department will tell you the zoning requirement for the property, including setbacks, lot coverage and max height of the building. They will also explain any other processes that may be required. Our Building Services Division will provide you with the requirements for an entrance permit for the driveway from our Municipal road.
