Transportation

Each day we commute to and from our homes to work or to take our kids to gymnastics or soccer. We run to the store for milk or travel to the cottage on the weekend. Commuting in Clarington is now more convenient; we have carpool lots and public transit routes located across the Municipality to help residents get around.

When we plan, design and construct Clarington's road network we consider active transportation, such as walking or cycling so that residents can choose from a variety of options to get around.

Active transportation

Active transportation is recognized as an increasingly relevant issue in light of traffic congestion issues, environmental concerns, the rise in obesity and chronic diseases associated with a lack of physical activity, and the need for personal mobility choices to support an aging population.

We consider the needs of cyclists and pedestrians in the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of Clarington's road network. Walking and cycling alternatives are promoted through supportive urban planning, road design with provision of appropriate facilities such as dedicated paths and paved road shoulders, and education about routes and the benefits of active living.

Clarington Transportation Master Plan (CTMP)

The Clarington Transportation Master Plan (CTMP) will guide the renewal and improvement of Clarington's transportation network over the next 20 years and beyond. The purpose of the plan is to create a coordinated, integrated, realistic and accessible multi modal transportation system. Our vision is to provide healthy, safe and convenient travel choices so that people and goods can move efficiently around Clarington.

Transportation network

Connecting people and places

The Municipality of Clarington transportation network supports the movement of goods and people and sustains Clarington communities in coordination with regional and provincial transportation systems and initiatives. Our social and economic wellbeing depend on the good management of these integrated networks to provide a wide range of mobility choices that respect the needs of all community members.

Goods movement

The Municipality of Clarington is nestled against the eastern fringe of the Greater Toronto Area and offers prime access to some of eastern Ontario's richest agricultural lands, recreational resources, a thriving energy sector supported by innovative resources in science and technology and Canada's largest market of over 6 million people.

The majority of Clarington's population is just over an hour away from Toronto's Pearson International Airport, Toronto Island Airport, Oshawa Municipal Airport and the future Pickering Airport that support corporate air travel, federal customs services and integration with intermodal transportation facilities served by:

• Highway 401
• Highway 407
• CN and CP mainline rail service
• Access to three deep-water ports
• Future extension of GO rail service to Bowmanville.

The Municipality of Clarington actively pursues integration of its transportation network with these resources and advocates with the Region of Durham and the Ministry of Transportation on behalf of residents, local business and institutions.
