The municipal register is a list of all properties in the municipality that have been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Additionally, Council can include properties in the register that have not been designated if the properties are believed to be of cultural heritage value or interest.
The register is a way to identify properties that have cultural heritage value and is an important planning tool for the conservation of heritage properties and provides interim protection from demolition.
While designated properties have protection from alteration and demolition under Part IV or V of the Ontario Heritage Act, non-designated properties on the register cannot be demolished unless the owners give Council at least 60 days’ notice in writing. The notice is to include any plans and information that Council may require. The 60-day period allows Council to consider whether a demolition permit should be issued or whether the property should be designated.
