Clarington-wide internet access is crucial for our residents who rely on stable connections, especially when people are working and learning at home and depend on virtual entertainment.
The Municipality has been working with several internet service providers and the federal and provincial governments to increase connectivity to as many households across Clarington as possible. By the end of 2021, around 98 per cent of our residents will be able to access a reliable network because of this ongoing work.
Clarington has supported several private companies, including Bell and Rural Wave (powered by Rogers), who made applications through a federally funded program that supports projects focusing on high-speed internet connections to rural and remote communities. Both Bell and Rural Wave recently received funding through the Universal Broadband Fund – Rapid Response Stream.

Why doesn’t the Municipality ensure that residents in Clarington have equitable access to the internet? |
The Municipality does not provide broadband services. Clarington works with private internet service providers to ensure that our community is connected. Unfortunately, these types of services require significant financial investments that some of these companies cannot make on their own. Earlier this year, the federal government established the Universal Broadband Fund – Rapid Response Stream to help Canadians living in rural and remote communities get stable access and support high-speed internet projects across the country. |
Why is it so difficult to get reliable internet and cellphone connections in rural Clarington? |
Private service providers are working to address services. It is quite costly to invest in some remote and rural areas where building infrastructure to support a single home may be cost-prohibitive. Contact a private service provider for more details. |
