The Municipality of Clarington is sharing the following statements condemning the recent discovery of racist graffiti in Clarington:
Statement from Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster:
“As Mayor of Clarington, it is with a heavy heart that I address this recent incident of hate and ignorance. This small-minded act certainly does not reflect the values we cherish in Clarington – values of respect, equity, and inclusivity. We remain dedicated to creating a community where everyone can feel safe and welcome. On behalf of Clarington Council, I want to thank Durham Region Transit staff for swiftly removing the graffiti and the DRPS for their serious investigation.”
Tenzin Shomar, Chair of Clarington’s Diversity Advisory Committee, shares the following on behalf of the Diversity Advisory Committee and Anti-Black Racism Task Force:
“Racist graffiti has no place in our communities. It spreads hatred, fuels division, and erodes the dignity and safety of all. It is both frustrating and saddening to hear about these hate messages targeted towards the Black community. These continuing incidents highlight the importance of the Clarington Diversity Advisory Committee and Anti-Black Racism Task Force, and we remain steadfast in our goal of eliminating all forms of racism and discrimination in our community. We stand together in condemning such acts and remain committed to fostering respect, inclusivity, and unity for everyone in Clarington.”
