Clarington, Ontario – As we mark National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement.
“This year, National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women resonates deeply within our community. It’s a heartrending moment to acknowledge all those who have endured gender-based violence and to mourn those we’ve tragically lost.
Each year, we remember the 14 young women senselessly killed in a hateful act of misogyny that took place at Polytechnique Montreal on December 6, 1989. This year, our community is heartbroken as we also honour the memories of Laurie Crew and Katrina Zwolinksi, who were tragically killed in Courtice as a result of intimate partner violence.
It is unacceptable that women, girls, and gender-diverse people still face the threat of violence, around the world and right here in Clarington. Our community stands united in opposition to misogyny, hate, and gender-based violence.
Clarington is committed to supporting community safety and well-being, and creating a safe, inclusive municipality for all.”
