Clarington, Ontario – Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement in response to the trade tariffs.
“This is a disappointing moment in history as President Trump’s trade tariffs take effect. The escalating trade war will hurt many people in Canada and the United States. This threatens the intertwined economies of Canada and the U.S., hitting our agricultural and manufacturing sectors hard and driving up the cost of goods.
Clarington Council urges the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada to enact legislation to champion Canadian businesses by giving them a leading edge in our procurement processes and dismantling inter-provincial trade barriers. By partnering with the Region of Durham and municipalities across the province, we’re standing up for our communities.
Now, more than ever, it’s important to shop locally and support Canadian-made businesses. Never forget that we have significant buying power both collectively and as individuals. For those unsure where to start, the Clarington Board of Trade and local BIAs are excellent guides for finding local goods and services.
In responding to this trade war, our community and national strength lies in unity. Let’s support our workers and uphold our values. Shop local, support Canada.”
