Clarington, Ontario – As we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has released the following statement.
“Today, our thoughts are with the survivors of the Residential School System, their families and the Indigenous communities still impacted by the intergenerational trauma of these schools. We remember those who died, those who are missing and the survivors who continue to live with this devastating piece of Canadian history.
As we mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, I want to reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation and our ongoing work to support and engage with Indigenous communities. Clarington is taking steps to move us forward on the pathway toward reconciliation, to address the various Calls to Action and Calls for Justice at the local level.
To move toward a more hopeful future, we must acknowledge this tragic chapter in our history and ensure that it is never repeated. We owe that to the children who survived the Residential Schools and the many who did not.”
