Clarington, Ontario – June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada; Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement.
“This month, we honour the history, strength, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples here in Clarington and across Canada. We also pay tribute to their resilience and courage in the face of colonization, oppression, and discrimination.
We are grateful for the opportunity to live and work in Clarington on land located on the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas and Chippewas of the Anishinabeg, known today as the Williams Treaties First Nations. We commit to demonstrating our respect for the rich cultures of the Indigenous peoples and honouring our treaty obligations.
We also recognize that action must match words on the path to truth and reconciliation. As part of our commitment to reconciliation, we have included the development and implementation of an Indigenous Engagement and Relationship Strategy in Clarington’s Strategic Plan. Through the IDEA Strategy, Clarington continues to develop responses to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.
We invite all residents of Clarington to celebrate National Indigenous History Month by learning more about the Indigenous Peoples who have shaped and continue to shape our country and our community.”
