Clarington, Ontario – As we mark Indigenous Veterans Day, Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement.
“Today, we observe Indigenous Veterans Day in honour of all First Nations, Inuit and Metis veterans who served in Canada’s military efforts in times of war and peace.
Indigenous Veterans Day was established to recognize the often-ignored contributions of Indigenous veterans, who were excluded from Remembrance Day observances until 1995 when they were finally allowed to lay wreaths at the National War Memorial to honour their dead comrades. Approximately 7,000 First Nations and an unknown number of Metis, Inuit and non-Status men and women served in the First and Second World Wars, and the Korean War. In subsequent generations, numerous Indigenous peoples have continued to serve with distinction. Now, when we are working toward Truth and Reconciliation, we must ensure their sacrifices are duly recognized.
On this day of remembrance, we acknowledge and honour the legacy of Canada’s Indigenous veterans, their resilience, courage, and significant contributions to protecting our nation. With eternal gratitude, we must choose never to forget.”
