Clarington, Ontario – Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has released the following statement:
“In Clarington, we know what a powerful economic driver the nuclear industry can be. I am thrilled by the recent news confirming that building four small modular reactors (SMRs) at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington Nuclear Generating Station is expected to have a positive economic impact worth billions of dollars.
The potential impact of this project is well illustrated by the Conference Board of Canada’s report, which estimates the SMRs will contribute $15.3 billion to Canada’s GDP, create thousands of local jobs, and generate $4.9 billion in tax revenues for the municipal, provincial, and federal governments over 65 years.
The nuclear industry is in the midst of a global renaissance, and the steps we take today will centre Clarington as a global hub for the sector and new nuclear technology. The advances made here will position highly skilled nuclear industry workers from our community to supply products, services, and expertise to a new global SMR market.
I’m excited to see the economic growth and job creation that the Darlington SMR project will bring to Clarington as we build a reliable, affordable and clean source of electricity for the future.”
