Clarington, Ontario – As we mark Black History Month, Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement.
“As Black History Month begins, we celebrate and honour the legacy of the Black community in Clarington and across Canada.
This month is an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and recommit to learning more about the stories of Black communities, their struggles to achieve racial justice, and how they shape Canadian history. This is how we honour the past, present and future contributions of Black Canadians. I encourage all residents to learn more about Black
History Month by participating in one of the community events taking place in Clarington and across Durham Region this February.
Clarington is strengthened by its growing diversity. However, systemic racism and racial discrimination are heartbreaking realities in our society, faced by far too many people. This month and every month, we must recognize the hard-won progress and impact that has been made and acknowledge where we still have work to do.
Let us be tireless advocates for diversity and inclusion in Clarington. We have a responsibility to work together toward equity and a brighter future for us all.”
