Clarington, Ontario – The following statement has been released by Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster, expressing condolences on the death of the Honourable James K. Bartleman, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, at age 83. Mr. Bartleman’s death was announced on Thursday, August 17.
“I am deeply sorry to hear about the passing of Ontario’s 27th Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable James K. Bartleman. On behalf of Council and the Municipality of Clarington, I want to express our deepest condolences to his family and all those grieving his loss.
As the first Indigenous Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Mr. Bartleman’s legacy is immeasurable. We owe him a great debt for his unwavering commitment to championing Indigenous communities, promoting anti-racism endeavours, and advancing education and literacy programs. His work in diplomacy and as a renowned Canadian author has been a source of admiration and inspiration for many.
In memory of the esteemed Mr. Bartleman, flags across Clarington have been respectfully lowered to half-mast until after his funeral."
