Clarington, Ontario – The following statement has been released by Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster, expressing condolences on the death of Murray Sinclair, the national Indigenous leader who led Canada's landmark Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). At 73 years old, Mr. Sinclair’s death was announced on Monday, November 4.
“Our community is saddened to learn of the passing of Murray Sinclair, a highly esteemed national leader in Indigenous justice and advocacy. On behalf of Council and the Municipality of Clarington, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to his family, the Anishinaabe community, and all those mourning his loss.
As Canadians, we acknowledge a profound debt to Mr. Sinclair for his unwavering dedication to leading the Truth and Reconciliation Commission into residential schools. The former judge and senator dedicated his life to championing the rights and freedoms of Indigenous Peoples. His legacy is profound and has impacted reforms in Indigenous-government relations, healthcare, policing and law.
Mr. Sinclair once described achieving reconciliation like climbing a mountain; we must proceed one step at a time. In his honour, Clarington remains committed to advancing Truth and Reconciliation and fulfilling the TRC’s calls to action.”
