Clarington, Ontario – Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement as we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
"Today, we reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation and our ongoing support for Indigenous communities as we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. With sombre hearts, we pause to reflect and recognize the devastating impact the residential school system had and continues to have on the families who mourn those who died, those who are missing, and the survivors who continue to live with the lasting effects of colonialism. In Clarington, we are taking steps to move toward reconciliation and continue to work and consult with local Indigenous communities to create action plans to redress this legacy. As we move toward reconciliation, we have to acknowledge a tragic chapter in our history, learn from it and ensure that it's never repeated."
