Clarington, Ontario – As local students prepare to head into summer holidays, the Municipality of Clarington is taking steps to improve road safety in school zones for when classes resume this fall.
Drivers will need to slow down as the speed limit in school zones on Clarington roads is being reduced from 50 kilometres per hour to 30 kilometres per hour. New speed limit signs will be installed over the summer months, to be completed in time for the start of the 2024-25 school year.
“Parents had valid concerns about student safety and speeding in school zones, and Council listened. We’re lowering speed limits at Clarington schools along local roads,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “We’re using the tools we have available to do our utmost to keep our kids safer and give parents some peace of mind.”
The following schools, located on Municipality of Clarington roads, will be affected:
While most schools in Clarington are located on roads under Clarington’s jurisdiction, there are some schools on Regional or Provincially-owned roads that are not part of this project.
Clarington is committed to supporting a safe, diverse, inclusive and vibrant community. This initiative is an action item of Clarington’s 2024-27 Strategic Plan: to address traffic-related safety issues in school zones, which was informed by feedback from residents. Staff are also working on a Traffic Calming Plan to create safer roads throughout Clarington.
