Clarington January 23, 2020/- Clarington received the 2019 Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) Project of the Year award for the Mill Street South transportation improvement project. The Municipality accepted the award in partnership with CIMA+ and M & S Architectural Ltd. during the OPWA annual conference held on Thursday.
The Mill Street project received Council approval in 2016. The project focused on improving pedestrian safety and access to Bond Head’s picturesque waterfront while still preserving the unique rural character of the neighbourhood, which includes a mature tree canopy and many historic properties.
After extensive community outreach and consultation, construction began in 2018 and crews built a one-and-a-half metre wide asphalt path along the west side of Mill Street leading to a boardwalk and viewing platform at the waterfront. Three speed tables and a three-way stop were installed as traffic calming measures, and the speed limit was reduced to 40 kilometres per hour.
“This is a perfect example of how engaging the community is critical to the project process,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “The collaboration between staff and residents has helped build relationships and trust, and has led to a safe and functional design that can be enjoyed by all,” added Mayor Foster.
