Clarington is reminding property owners to keep sidewalks and roads clear after a snowfall.
Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours after the snow stops falling. That 24-hour period is often the best time to play in fresh snow. Clearing sidewalks in a timely manner is a great opportunity to improve safety, enjoy some crisp winter air, get some exercise, and have some fun. It also helps avoid having to pay a penalty of the cost of the Municipality completing the work plus a $50 administrative fee.
Sidewalks and windrows must be cleared to their full width, including between snowfalls or when drifting occurs. Owners of corner properties must also clear the corner sidewalk links. In addition, slippery surfaces must be treated with safety salt or sand.
Clarington has introduced a new municipal sidewalk snow-clearing program this winter to help keep community walkways safer and easier to travel on. Municipal crews will now be plowing and salting sidewalks on primary routes, pedestrian crossovers, and school crossings in downtown and high-traffic areas.
Residents are also asked to not park on streets overnight during a snowfall to help Clarington snowplows clear the roads quickly and safely. Our snowplow operators work hard to clear our roads, but obstructions like parked vehicles can slow down or even stop snow clearing on your street.
