Clarington, Ontario – The Municipality of Clarington is proud to provide the financial support needed to begin the construction of Marigold Hospice Care in Newcastle. On Monday, September 25, Clarington Council voted to provide an extra $1.25 million grant to Durham Region Hospice – Clarington.
“After years of work, this much-needed residential hospice is on the brink of being able to break ground, and we’re closing the gap! I am proud to say that thanks to Council’s compassionate support, local health care will soon improve for our residents,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.
For those at the end of life, the hospice will provide comfort, care, and compassion in a home-like setting and support for their families. When open, the facility will address a significant gap in the current health care system in Clarington.
Through the challenges of the pandemic and escalating construction costs, a dedicated volunteer team has worked for years to raise approximately $8 million in donations for the Clarington hospice fundraising campaign. Clarington's $1.25 million grant is the final push needed to build this project.

“We are so incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of Clarington Council. Since work first began on creating a hospice, members of Council have championed the cause. We are so excited to make this facility a reality, and we would not be able to without Clarington’s contributions,” said Melodie Zarzeczny, Marigold Hospice Care Board Chair.
The Municipality has strongly supported the new hospice, donating surplus land on Cobbledick Road in Newcastle for the building and a grant to offset development charges for the project. Clarington declared January 29, 2023, Durham Region Hospice – Clarington Awareness Day. Proceeds from this month’s 19th annual Clarington Golf Classic will also support the hospice.
With the additional grant from Clarington Council, Marigold Hospice Care is expected to break ground this fall.
