First look at the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre. We are excited to share the renderings of the new South Bowmanville Recreation Centre. On September 23, Council approved the addition of an aquatics centre to the plans for the facility.
Features
The South Bowmanville Recreation Centre will include:
- Outdoor skating trail
- Fully accessible gymnasium with two FIBA regulation basketball courts, which will accommodate a variety of sports and includes perimeter bench seating for spectators and athletes
- Multi-purpose rooms for recreation programming
- Quiet room
- FIFA-sized multi-sport dome with 3-lane indoor walking track
- Open change rooms and private team change rooms
It will also have an aquatics centre that includes:
- 25-metre main pool
- Teaching pool
- Therapy pool
- Universal changerooms
- Large viewing area
- Staff change facilities
- Lifeguard and staff spaces
- Large on-deck storage
- Multi-purpose space near the pool to accommodate aquatic leadership programming, sessional aquatic staff training, and other activities.
The aquatics centre will also include accessibility to pool tanks and dedicated accessible change facilities, and has been designed with lane and public swimming, swimming lessons, and aquafit classes in mind. This will open as phase two of this plan.

Location
The centralized location at Clarington Fields, 2375 Baseline Road, was identified as the best accessible area for the new recreation centre.
Clarington staff will endeavour to ensure baseball and football amenities at Clarington Fields will remain accessible throughout the project. Clarington staff are working on a plan to relocate user permits for the soccer fields, which were constructed for temporary use until the facility was developed.

What is the project schedule? |

The project is currently in the design phase. Construction for phase one is expected to begin in spring 2025 and the facility is expected to open to the public in summer 2026. The Municipality is currently finalizing a timeline for phase two, which includes the opening of the aquatics centre. |

What sports will the dome be able to accommodate? |
|
The dome will be constructed to accommodate a variety of sports, including but not limited to soccer, football, cricket, ultimate frisbee and golf programs. |

What sports can the indoor gym accommodate? |
|
In addition to having two FIBA regulation basketball courts, the gymnasium can accommodate pickleball, basketball, volleyball, and tennis to name a few. |

How would the outdoor ice rink space be used in the non-winter months? |

The concrete surface of the outdoor skating trail will be designed for year-round use and serve as a public gathering space for the facility. The potential uses could include an outdoor community event space or a public market area. |

Why were the indoor ice pads and removed from the facility plan? |
|
In Clarington’s 2022 budget, there was $65 million earmarked to expand the Bowmanville indoor soccer facility into a state-of-the-art recreation facility, including a twin pad ice rink and aquatic centre. However, construction cost increases led to a new cost estimate of $134 million, and the plan for the new recreation facility was paused in March of 2023. In October 2023, Clarington Council voted to move forward with the initial construction of a gymnasium and multi-purpose rooms for registered and drop-in programs; a sports dome with indoor walking track; and an outdoor skating trail. On September 23, 2024, Council also voted to include an aquatic centre at this facility. When the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan is finalized in 2024, Council will use the results to consider additional amenities across Clarington, including but not limited to indoor ice rinks. |
